Abstract

Strengthening religious moderation in junior high schools (SMP) is a necessity because basically junior high school students are children who are in a phase of understanding and distinguishing between good and bad. This article aims to explore the importance of religious moderation in the junior high school environment. The method used in this study is library studies by analyzing books or journal articles that are significant with the theme. This discussion of religious moderation departs from the views of Azyumardi Azra in 2020 in his book entitled "Islamic Moderation in Indonesia" by looking at values ​​education efforts with two approaches: (1) instilling values ​​(inculcation approach), and (2) cognitive moral development ( cognitive moral development). The conclusion from this article is that junior high school students are students who face drastic transformations mentally and physically. Efforts to instill religious ideals in students begin by giving them the following values: (1) faith values, (2) worship values, and (3) moral values. In this way, it will be easier for them to accept and understand the meaning of religious moderation, its values ​​and the principles of its application.
