Abstract

The Qur'an, the holy book of Islam, expounds upon various aspects of life and existence, including the universe and its phenomena. No less than 750 verses explicitly elucidate matters related to the cosmos, in addition to other verses that allude to it implicitly. Nevertheless, the Qur'an is not a book of scientific knowledge aimed at explaining scientific realities; rather, it serves as a guide towards attaining happiness in this world and the hereafter. In delineating the universe, the Qur'an presents concepts that are in harmony with modern scientific discoveries. For instance, the Qur'an alludes to the occurrence of the Big Bang as the beginning of the universe's creation, and depicts the initial condition of the universe as a smoke (dukhan) that later developed. These concepts have been scientifically proven by scholars and accepted as valid theories in modern cosmology. Furthermore, the Qur'an also describes various celestial bodies such as the sun, moon, stars, planets, and others, along with their benefits for human life. The Qur'an's exposition of the universe signifies the power and greatness of Allah as the Creator of the universe. Hence, the Qur'an invites humankind to contemplate the signs of Allah's greatness in the universe and guides them towards drawing closer to Him.
